The President today announced his intention to nominate Steven E. Steiner, of Maryland, to be accorded the rank of Ambassador during his tenure of service as United States Representative to the START Joint Compliance and Inspection Commission.
Since 1988 Ambassador Steiner has served as the United States Representative to the Special Verification Commission. Prior to this, he served as Director of Defense and Arms Control for the National Security Staff at the White House, 1983 - 1988; Director of Public Affairs for the Bureau of European Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, 1981 - 1983; and as Deputy Director of Theater Military Police for the Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs, 1978 - 1981. Ambassador Steiner entered the Foreign Service in 1966.
Ambassador Steiner graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1963) and Columbia University (M.I.A., 1966). He was born July 14, 1940, in Kittanning, PA. Ambassador Steiner is married, has three children, and resides in Chevy Chase, MD.
