David Hoffman Collection

(7.5 linear feet / 14800 pages)

The David Hoffman Collection consists of materials concerning the career of George Bush. A reporter for the Washington Post, Hoffman covered Bush from his 1980 campaign for president through his presidency (1989-1993). This collection contains the accumulated research files that supported Hoffman's reporting. These paper are arranged into eight distinct series: 1980 Campaign Files, 1984 Campaign Files, 1988 Campaign Files, Biographical Files, Early Career Files, Iran-Contra Files, Presidential Files, and Subject Files.

The 1980 Campaign Files, 1984 Campaign Files, and 1988 Campaign Files contain newspaper clippings, magazine articles, speeches, transcripts of interviews, and computer printouts of stories by the Associated Press and other news organizations. This information documents provides a detailed account of George Bush's several attempts to win the presidency. Special mention should be made of the collection of newspaper articles written by Hoffman describing the 1988 campaign. Note that material concerning the 1992 election is not included in this collection.

A series composed of only several folders, the Biographical Files explore the financial history of President Bush, trace his ancestry in some detail (a family tree is included), and describe recollections of associates, friends, and classmates. This series contains newspaper clippings (mostly from the Hartford Courant) concerning the political career of Senator Prescott Bush, George Bush's father.

The Early Career Files concern the time Bush served as a Congressman, U.N. Ambassador, and director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1966-1977). Articles from the Texas Observer, Houston Chronicle, and New York Times draw attention to the different types of public service Bush performed during these two decades. This series also contains Bush's voting record taken from the Congressional Quarterly Almanac.

The Iran-Contra Files follows the development of events that occurred in President Reagan's administration. These files consist of documents made public by the Independent Counsel and Congressional investigations, and includes the deposition submitted by President Reagan.

The Presidential Files consist of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, speeches, pamphlets, pool reports, and pieces by Hoffman detailing the Bush Administration's foreign policy, especially President Bush's dealings with Mikhail Gorbachev. Trips by the President to Canada and the Far East also receive lengthy treatment and analysis.

The Subject Files consists of material that was not part of the previous series, including files related to Vice President Bush, other individuals, and general policy issues. Approximately 35 audiocassettes of George Bush speeches and interviews recorded by David Hoffman were transferred from this series to the Audiovisual Collection. Michael Dukakis, President Reagan, and Robert McFarlane are also the subject of several audiocassette recordings in this collection.
